Peter Battisti - Financing the Future of Fisheries: Innovation, Investment, and Impact

Conservation policies often create economic challenges for fisheries, limiting their ability to thrive in formal markets. In this keynote, Peter Battisti of Future of Fish examined how cross-sector collaboration and systemic financial innovation are unlocking new opportunities for investment and long-term sustainability in ocean fisheries.

Using a case study on implementing an electronic monitoring mandate in Chile, he detailed the challenges of coordinating government agencies and engaging resistant artisanal fishers, and introduced how Future of Fish bridges top-down mandates with bottom-up initiatives — attracting funding, providing expertise, and conducting collaborative pilots to test solutions.
